Driving safety

A genuine safety package is the AL-KO Safety Kit with the AL-KO anti-slinger coupling AKS™, the stable anti-theft device Safety Compact, the Soft Dock and the Safety Ball to prevent unauthorised uncoupling of the caravan.

Just how important it is to set the support load correctly is also underlined by the legislator, who now imposes a fine of up to 60 euros on the support load muffle and a point if it exceeds or falls below the permissible limits by 50 percent. Paragraph 44 of the German StVZO states: "In the case of rigid drawbar trailers (including centre axle trailers) with a permissible total weight of not more than 3.5 t, the minimum support load to be taken up by the towing vehicle may not be less than 4 per cent of the actual total weight of the trailer; however, it need not be more than 25 kg", whereby the technically permissible support load of the towing vehicle is to be determined by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, the wording of the law leads one to believe that 25 kilos of drawbar load may be sufficient. But that is not the case.

Rather, the higher the drawbar load, the better the driving stability and thus the driving safety.

However, care must be taken - prescribed upper limits must be adhered to at all costs, because an additional load that is initially still statically manageable can increase tenfold during driving.

Most passenger cars can cope with 75 kilograms of drawbar load; for larger station wagons or SUVs the limit is higher, in some cases over 100 kilograms. But the manufacturer of the caravan also mentions an upper support load limit that must be adhered to - usually 100 kilograms. The lower maximum value for the drawbar load is then decisive for the combination.

And this upper limit should also be exhausted.
