Decisive things before buying a winch with electric drive
Where does the winch get its power from?
The more weight a winch has to pull, the more power it needs: It can be good that an electrical line has to quickly pass through several hundred amps!
Suitable batteries and generously dimensioned cable cross-sections are indispensable to ensure that very powerful winches can be operated safely. Each contact point must remain absolutely corrosion-free so that cables and - very importantly - the contact points do not heat up too much.
A winch with a tensile load of about 4 tons can thus quickly reach a current consumption of more than 400 amperes - depending on the manufacturer.
This requires cables that are as short and thick as possible. A copper cable cross section of more than 40mm² is a minimum here to the battery, which is also sufficiently dimensioned.
In any case, it is advantageous if a running vehicle engine can support the battery during operation, so that the alternator on the vehicle side supplies part of the required current for the running winch.
Is it important to always mount a fast winch?
No, not at all. The slow rotating winch (the length of the wrapped rope is measured in metres per minute) is perfectly sufficient for occasional use. Faster winches are only preferred for competitions, because the slower the winch actually pulls in the rope, the safer their use is.
The use of the electric winch on the vehicle is wide spread.
